There was excellent weather and a vibrant atmosphere Thursday evening at West Potomac HS, where the six time defending champion Falls Church Barons and Alexandria A’s battled in a possible early season playoff preview. Both teams brought full squads, culminating in an A’s (4-0) win to remain undefeated by beating the champs 7-3 in nine innings.

Steve Lohrman delivered his second win of the young season by only giving up four hits through 7 and 1/3 innings with three earned runs. Lohrman and the A's defense held the stacked Barons offense to just one infield hit through 6 and 2/3 innings. Nathan Pittman started the game for the Barons, striking out three hitters in the first three innings. George Omeir got the scoring started with two outs in the first, with a loud drive to left field that exited the park with great haste. An inning later, the aforementioned infield hit knotted the game at 1, until an opposite field single by Alexandria Athletic Nick Anderson scored Craig Simon in the third inning.  Lohrman, Pittman, and Barons reliever Glaser held the game at 2-1 through seven innings.

The eighth inning was the decisive moment in the game. The A’s worked their way on base via three walks and back to back doubles from Taylor Bryner and George Omeir, resulting in a five run inning.  The Barons responded in the bottom of the eighth with two patient walks, a single by leadoff hitter Antonio Ortiz, and a double by Sam Ballerini. In the end, the two runs the Barons scored in the eighth were not enough to rally behind in the ninth. Taylor Bryner registered the save, striking out two and giving only two inherited runs through 1 and 2/3 innings in another nail-biting performance that began with the bases loaded and one out.

The A's and Barons look to continue to battle near the top of the standings, and the stakes will be equally high when the two teams meet again later in the season on June 15th at McLean High School.

Both teams play next this Saturday. The A's face the Senators 12pm at Cosca, and the Barons will play two at 5pm at West Potomac vs the Washington Thundercats.
